Airmen and Headhunters

Caught the tail end of my vets group today, many of them the vanishing WWII aviators. One described being on the mission this film is about. They were bombing a Japanese Naval base in the South Pacific. The flak, from 18 inch Battleship guns on down, “Was like flying into the grand finale at a 4th of July fireworks display.” Several of the B-24 Liberator bombers were blown out of the air. The survivors of one managed to parachute into the jungle…where they were met by headhunters….fortunately friendly ones who hated Japs, knew missionaries before the war, and hid them out for months until a gutsy escape was conceived by air….the subject of this PBS TV show:
